Getting Exposure: 5 Keys to Get Media Coverage

Admin 0

The media can make you famous. Media is any form of mass communication (TV, radio, print, internet). Any place with listeners and viewers like radio shows to YouTube channels can be classified as forms of media. I’ve been in the media for over 15 years and here’s what I’ve seen:

• BUILD RELATIONSHIPS BEFORE YOU NEED THEM
A big mistake can be made by creating your product and then looking for help to promote it after its been released. Social media has made it easier to find and reach to your target media people, not for promoting your product but to know who to build a relationship with. Start by thinking about what you can help them out with and do it.

• WHO ARE YOU TARGETING?
Make a list of all the media outlets you want to appear on and figure out what it takes to make that happen. Whether it’s radio, blogs, print or TV, research each outlet first and learn what kind of stories they feature and learn how their process works. Some media is advertising-based. Some media may be looking for gossip stories. Every outlet is different.

• DOES YOUR MESSAGE SPREAD?
Whether it’s from your new song, your new promotion, or from your physical appearance, you need people excited to spread your message to attract even more people. You have to be worth repeating or recommending to create word-of-mouth promotions. Being popular, new, different, exciting, or controversial are all ways to spread ideas through the media.

• BE CREATIVE
There are more ways to get exposure than only thinking about your own product. Are there any events, special dates or popular stories that you can speak to the media about? Your local sporting team may be heading to the championship game, what can you do to grab some of that shine?

• POWER IN NUMBERS…BRING YOUR AUDIENCE!

There is power in numbers so the more viewers, listeners, or readers you bring with you to watch you the better. It’s a win-win for both sides. They get exposure to your fan base and you get into theirs, Do you ever wonder why the same popular celebrities and the same news stories keep getting publicity? It’s because they have come with a big following of people. This is one of the reasons you need to build your own fan base.
